In response to the criticism from the DPP that the KMT had been able to participate in the World Health Assembly for several years during the Ma administration because of our “embrace of China”, Alfred Lin, Deputy Director of the KMT Culture and Communications Committee, said that President Tsai shouted to the international community just a few days ago that “Taiwan cannot be excluded from the WHA because of politics”. However, tons of DPP members are making a fuss about the pragmatic cross-Strait policy of the Ma administration, and are unwilling to take any pragmatic and effective ways to help Taiwan participate in the international arena because of ideological reasons. Obviously, the DPP government itself is the one making Taiwan unable to join international affairs because of ideological factors.
Alfred Lin expressed that the World Health Organization currently has 194 member states, and there must be more than 98 member states that agree to the joint proposal of our 13 diplomatic allies so Taiwan could return to the World Health Assembly. However, most of the countries in the WHO are third world countries or diplomatic allies of the PRC. In the past, when we asked our diplomatic allies to propose invitations to allow us to participate in the WHO with observer status and under the name of “Chinese Taipei”, they were rejected by a wide margin of votes. It was not until President Ma took office and reestablished the foundation of mutual confidence between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait by directly sending envoys to dialogue with mainland China that our country was able to attend the World Health Assembly under the name of “Chinese Taipei”.
Deputy Director Lin emphasized that Taiwan’s participation in international organizations is a great expectation of the people, and we must keep working hard to strive for the support of our friends in the international society to allow Taiwan to participate in international organizations. At the same time, maintaining the cross-strait communication with reciprocity, mutual trust, and dignity, as well as encouraging civil society to come together, will also help Taiwan to have more room for activities in the international arena.
