Eric Chu, the Chairman of the Kuomintang (KMT) presided over the meeting of the Central Standing Committee on June 22. Chairman Chu said that the KMT set up a representative office in the United States clearly conveyed to the outside world and the United States that the KMT is a “pro-American and pro-democracy” political party. The KMT positions are to “protect Taiwan, preserve democracy, and fight for the future.” In addition, the KMT always hoped that the two sides of the Taiwan Strait would communicate in a peaceful way to avoid conflict. Chairman Chu also mentioned in particular that the US was paying attention to Taiwan’s energy issue and believed that it would be a major crisis for Taiwan.

Chairman Chu pointed out that the KMT’s representative office in the United States was established to tell everyone that “we are here” and “we are back”, which was warmly welcomed by the US side. The office demonstrates a clear stand to the US executive branch, Congress and academics that the KMT is a “pro-American and pro-democracy” party, the KMT has always stood on the side of democracy and freedom, if there’s anyone who labeled the KMT of “pro-China and anti-US”, it’s absolutely a slander.

Chairman Chu also mentioned that the Kuomintang should protect Taiwan with national defense, and the most important thing is protecting Taiwan in a peaceful way. In order to take a clear stand to national defense and security, Chairman Chu hopes that the two sides of the Strait can use the way of discussion such as dialogue and exchanges to avoid conflict and war. This is also the consistent position of the KMT to “protect Taiwan, protect democracy, and fight for the future”; Chairman Chu sincerely thank the US administration, including the State Department, AIT and other departments which gave him the highest reception and courtesy ever given to a non-presidential candidate, at the same time he thank the academic community and overseas Chinese community for their warm welcome.

Lastly, Chairman Chu said that the United States was extremely concerned about Taiwan’s energy supply issue. In particular, Taiwan’s electricity usage has hit a new high recently, the reserve capacity is only 8.77% today, it’s a really dangerous situation for Taiwan. The United States also believes that this will be the biggest crisis for Taiwan’s security. Therefore, Chairman Chu called on the DPP government to reverse the wrong policy as soon as possible, otherwise the power shortage crisis in Taiwan will become more and more serious, and it will also be the biggest national security crisis for Taiwan in the future.
